Furnace Pond
Mill Lane, Crabtree, West Sussex

Furnace Pond was originally a hammer pond (artificually made) serving a mill in Crabtree, found to the south of Leonardslee, a large garden estate. It is now a private fishing pond.

How to get here:

»

Road: A23 - Follow the A23 to Bolney, then head west along the A272 to Cowfold. At Cowfold, turn right on the roundabouts onto the A281, then continue onto Crabtree. Mill Lane will be on the right. +

Parking Details

The lane is quite narrow and there is nowhere to park up by the pond. There is a parking area outside numbers 18-23, and you can then walk down to the bridlepath (on the left).

Where to walk

Follow the bridlepath through the forest and it eventually comes alongside the pond.

This location is private and has no or limited access only. There is no access to the shore, but a public bridlepath runs around part of the pond.

"I have no idea if this really is the spot! I ended up taking the photo here as there was a sign on a tree ("private fishing"), and you can just make out the lake through the trees."

Additional Notes:

The bridlepath runs along the western side of the pond, and then turns east between it and Leonardslee. It's probably best to visit in winter when the trees aren't in full bloom!

"This photo doesn't really have any connection with the screenshot, but was the only clear view of the pond that I could find through the thick trees!"
