Park Lane
Fair Cross, Berkshire

The actual identity of this road is uncertain, as its southern end is described as Park Lane, but this may actually continue along the old Roman road rather than bend northwards where filming took place (TomTom says "unknown road"!).

How to get here:

»

Road: M4 - Exit the M4 at junction 11, and head south on the A33. At the first roundabout, turn left and head towards Spencers Wood. As it becomes the B3349, take the next main right-hand turn onto Beech Hill Road. Continue through Beech Hill, and then past Trowe's Lane, and then the next turning on the left is Park Lane. (~4.5 miles, 10m) +

26 May 2008: Chuck Foster: There wasn't anything recognisable around this area of the lane, which might well be down to some 36 years passing. I pinned the location for this scene based on the angle seen in the recognisable scene to the north, as the lane runs behind the copses in relation to where the explosive cloud rises.

Other nearby locations:

»

Mortimer Station (Planet of the Spiders). Road (1.7 miles, 3m) : Head north on Park Lane, then turn left at the end. Continue along until you pass over the railway bridge, then turn left into the station.

»

Stratfield Saye Park (The Time Monster). Road (1.4 miles, 3m) : Head south on Park Lane and follow it as it bends left. Continue across the crossroads onto Chequer Lane, and follow this to the northern entrance to the Park. (For access to the park when open, turn right at Trowe's Lane and the estate is on the left). Parking House

This location is erroneously listed in BBC documentation as being Mortimer Lane, which is actually nearer to Mortimer Station.

In the News:

»

5 Apr 1972: Reading Evening Post, p1: Look Who's Here - Stratfield Saye is about to be Exterminated: "Some time tomorrow, residents of the village of Stratfield Saye are going to be disturbed by one of the loudest explosions they are ever likely to hear. There is, however, no cause for alarm. Everyone's worst fears will go unrealised, for the explosion will be nothing more than members of the Doctor Who team working on a new television series. They will themselves withdraw half a mile before setting off the explosion, with is expected to be large enough to leave a crater behind in the ground. A particularly deserted site has been specially selected, and the local police have already been warned what to expect." (src :On Location)
