Slickstones Quarry

Also known as Cromhall Quarry
Formerly known as Amey Roadstone Company Quarry
Slickstones (Cromhall) Quarry is designated as a site of special scientific interest, and is home to a number of fossils covering reptiles, mammals and of course dinosaurs! At the time of filming it was owned by the Amry Roadstone Company, later taken over by Hanson. Since the summer of 2006 the quarry has been operating as an inland diving site, used by a number of diving clubs.

Road: M5 - Exit junction 14, then head east on the B4509 towards Charfield. Turn right at the junction with the B4058 and then follow it until you see the quarry entrance on the right. (2.4 miles, 4m) +

15 Jun 1976: The detonation of the cliff face during episode one was an actual one conducted by the owners and filmed by the production team, with the camera locked off in a protective steel case. Visual Effects Designer Colin Mapson: The guys who blew up the rock face were fantastic, real experts. They told us within ten feet where the blast debris would reach, allowing us to set up the camera for a spectacular low shot. They were spot-on with their prediction and it looked wonderful.
