Production Notes:

»

3 Nov 1975: John Challis on filming his death scene: I had to wade across a lake and be drowned by some rampant weed on the other side. As this was shot in December you can imagine how cold this was. Also, the lake was quite deep - yup to the chest, but two-thirds of it was mud. At the end of this shot I was supposed to seun underwater out of camera range. One the first take, the weed failed to rise, on the second the camera dipped down the bank, and on the third I got stuck in the mud. The fourth time, mercifully, it worked. I was plunged into a hot bath by my concerned dresser, given a tumbler full of Dettol and then presented with a bottle of brandy by the programme for doing my own stunt! (src :On Location, p131)
