The Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship, built for the tea trade and designed as one of the fastest sailing ships at its time in 1869. However, the emergence of the more powerful steam ships soon led to the demise of sail-based trade. The clipper soon moved to the wool trade, holding the record for the trip between Australia and Britain for some ten years. In 1895 it was sold to Portuguese company Ferreira and Co. and renamed Ferreira, where it continued to be used as a cargo ship until purchased by retired captain Wilfred Dowman in 1922 and was instead used as a training ship. In 1954 the ship was finally retired and put into permanent dry dock at Greenwich.
A catastrophic fire caused extensive damage in the early hours of 21st May 2007. Fortunately, the vast majority of historic items had already been removed due to ongoing conservation work, and after lengthy restoration the Cutty Sark was re-opened to the public on 25th April 2012.
