Dover Castle is one of the most strategic castles in England, and is on a site that has existed for over a 1000 years, first with a Roman lighthouse, an Anglo-Saxon church, and a castle since the Norman invasion of 1066. It has undergone a number of expansions over the centuries to make it the formidable landmark it now is, and has been used as a military headquarters in a number of wars ranging from Napolean to World War II, not to mention a potential nuclear bunker! The castle is now managed by English Heritage and is open to the public.

Road: A2 - Follow the A2 to Dover; when you reach the roundabout with the A258, turn right and follow the road until it weaves down the hill past the castle. The main car entrance will be on the left. Parking: included in admission fee. +

Road: M20/A20 - Follow the M20/A20 to Dover - as you enter the town you can see the castle on the hill! Continue through the town past the docks, crossing several roundabouts, until you reach the A258 on the left; the castle is well sign-posted. Follow the road up the hill and the entrance to the castle is on the right. Parking: included in admission fee. +

Rail: Dover Priory - Exit the station and turn left along Folkestone Road. Cross over at the roundabout and continue on West Street/Pencester Road until you reach Maison Dieu Road. Turn right and head along the road until the junction with the A258 (signposted for the castle). Walk up the hill until you reach the castle. +
