John's Hole Quarry
Stone, Kent
John's Hole Quarry is near Dartford in Kent, but is no longer in use.
11 Jun 2009: Chuck Foster: At the time of my visit there was work in progress in the quarry, though I don't know whether that means the quarry is in use again or not.
How to get here:
»
Road: M25 - Exit the M25 at the junction with the A206. On the eastern roundabout, take the exit onto Cotton Road and follow this to the junction with London Road (A226). Turn left and follow the road until you reach the quarry on the right-hand side (before Oak Road). Parking: unknown. +
»
Bus: John's Hole Quarry - John's Hole Quarry can be found on the east of the map, on London Road east of Cotton Lane. It is served by the 492 bus route. +
»
Rail: Greenhithe - From the station, head west along London Road (other side of roundabout) until you eventually reach the quarry, just past Oak Road. Alternatively you can catch the 492 bus from the station towards Dartford. +
For the east side of the quarry, best place to park is in Oak Road, off London Road (A226) - the quarry runs alongside the park. For the south side, it is easiest to park in Kirby Road, near the allotment - there is a footpath by the allotment that leads to Clarendon Gardens, and from there walk to the end of the road and turn left onto the A296, the quarry being on the left-hand side.

"This was taken through the only gap in the foliage by the quarry off the A296 at its southern end. You can't really see much here, certainly not the tunnel entrance."
