JR Freeman Cigars
Cardiff, Wales
John Reykers Freeman set up business as the first British cigar manufacturer during the 1830s. Originally based in London, the company moved to Cardiff in 1908. After the WWII the company was bought by Gallaher Ltd, and was become known for Hamlet cigars, produced there for some 43 years.
However, cigar demand has reduced in recent years, and after Gallaher were bought by Japan Tobacco, it was eventually decided to cease operations at Cardiff in 2009. The bulding is currently up for sale for £1.5m.
