Established by James Howell in 1856, Howell's Department Store is one of the largest stores in Wales, starting off as a small shop and gradually absorbing all smaller shops on Wharton Street as it grew! The family business was bought by House of Fraser in 1972, and though the store was formally branded as such in 2010, the old Howell's frontage remains, being a listed structure.
