Irongate/St. Katharine's Wharves
St. Katharine's Way, London
Irongate Wharf's history goes back to the 16th Century, known as a place where grain was landed for the city. The original wharf was destroyed by fire in 1846, but was back in use by 1854, becoming the major London base for the General Steam Navigation Company, who owned both it and the adjacent St. Katharine's Wharf. St. Katharine's was itself built in 1828 to enable larger ships to dock beside the river to unload to the six-storey warehouses of the docks.
The docks closed in 1968, and both wharves were demolished in the early 1970s and their warehouses are now the site of the Tower Hotel, which opened in 1973.
