Tower of London
London, EC3N 4AB
The White Tower at the heart of the site has existed since Norman times, when William the Conqueror had it built to show his power in the country. Over successive centuries further monarchs added to the site, but ceased to be a Royal residency during the reign of Henry VIII (where it gained more notoriety for royal prisoners and executions!). However, by the late Victorian era it was a major visitor attraction, and is now a World Heritage Site.
Admission: as of May 2008, £16.50 (£15.50 online), or £38.00 for annual pass to all five historic palaces
