Vesuvius is an active volcano in Italy, not far from Naples. Being active, it has erupted many times, most famously when it caused the destruction of Pompeii in AD79.

How to get here:

Bus/Train/Taxi: From Naples - From Capodichino airport, take the bus for the central station (Piazza Garibaldi). If you come to Naples by FS trains, you need to stop to Napoli Centrale station, too. From there, take the Circumvesuviana Railway to Ercolano-Scavi station. People who come from Sorrento or Pompei can reach Ercolano-Scavi station taking the Sorrento-Napoli or Pompei-Napoli lines. A bus service, managed by Vesuviana Mobilità, and a taxi service is available from Pompei, Ercolano-Scavi station and Naples to Mt. Vesuvius car park. (details from the vesuvionrete website) +

Road: A3 motorway - Exit Torre del Greco. Head through Via Cavallo, Via Scappi, Via Montedoro, Via Tironi, Via De Nicola and then Via Vesuvio; this is around three kilometres and eventually brings you to a crossroads where you will find the Creator Vesevo exhibition. From here, continue upwards and after about 3km you turn right at a crossroads bringing you to the old and new Vesuvius Observatory. To carry on to the crater, continue along the road and follow the right fork to a bar (and ex-chair lift), and then take the left fork and follow it for 2km to the car park. Road: A3 motorway - Exit Ercolano, turn left under the motorway and follow through Boscocatena, Benedetto Cozzolino, San Vito. This eventually leads to a crossroads where you will find the Creator Vesevo exhibition. To carry on to the crater, continue along the road and follow the right fork to a bar (and ex-chair lift), and then take the left fork and follow it for 2km to the car park.
