Formerly known as Butser Ancient Farm Project

The original Butser Ancient Farm project was founded here in 1972 by experimental archaeologist Peter Reynolds to test archaeological ideas. This site was closed down in 1989, and in 1991 a new site opened about 2 miles from the original at Bascomb Copse, near Charlton.

How to get here:

Road: A3 - Exit the A3 at Butser Ancient Farm, south of Petersfield. Turn left and follow the road over the A3, then turn right. Turn left onto Petersfield Road, and then right onto Hogs Lodge Lane, and then follow the lane up to the Butser Hill picnic area. +

Where to walk

Walk up the hill to the transmitter, and then head north-east to the trees; bear left by them and this leads to Little Butser. ~15m

The site of the village is best viewed from above (and saves you the walk down the steep hill!), as from here you can make out where the settlement was originally layed out. See also the model view that still remains at the Country Park Vistor Centre.

BBC documentation for the outside broadcast location places the address as "Pidham Hill, East Meon", which is actually some distance away. This might have been a base location initially before heading onto to the hill itself.
