Rutland, Leicestershire
Hambleton used to be known as Upper Hambleton and is the only village to survive along a higher ridge when when the Gwash Valley was flooded in 1975 to create Rutland Water reservoir. It is believed to be at one time the capital of the Anglo-Saxon Kings in Rutland. St. Andrew's Church in the village is dated from the 12th Century.

Road: A1 - Take the A1 to Stamford, and then exit at the junction with the A606 and head towards Oakham. Turn left onto the road to Hambleton, and then follow this into the village. +

Hambleton Ridge (Battlefield). Walk past the church on the road heading out of the village, passing the pub. As you leave the village, a track leading to the ridge will be on the right-hand side.

Hambleton Old Hall (Battlefield). Walk down the hill past St. Andrew's House; at the bottom cross the cattle grille into the nature reserve and walk along the road to the Hall.
