Kew Railway Bridge
Strand-on-the-Green, Kew, Middlesex
Kew Bridge Railway Bridge was opened by the London & South-Western Railway Company in 1869, forming part of their new line extension from South Acton Junction through to Richmond. The bridge was designed by W R Galbraith, and built by Brassey & Ogilvie. It is still in active use today by both London Underground's District Line service, and the Silverlink Rail service that runs from North Woolwich to Richmond.

Rail, Underground (District): Kew Gardens - exit from the Southbound platform onto West Park Road, and then turn left onto Burlington Avenue; follow the road to the end, and then cross Mortlake Road at the pedestrian crossing. Follow the path alongside the railway bridge until you reach the Thames - the location is under the bridge on your left. Alternatively, from Kew Bridge you can walk along the south Thames footpath to reach the railway bridge. (0.6 miles, 11m) +

Rail: Kew Bridge - Turn right out of the station, then then cross over and head across the bridge. On the other side of the river walk down the steps and under the bridge to the east side, then follow the path by the river until you reach the railway bridge. (0.6 miles, 12m) +

Over the years the river bank along this stretch has become very overgrown, making it difficult to achieve the same angle as was seen on screen.

The current sign underneath the bridge does not actually forbid you to dump bodies in the river, but instead informs you of what to do in an emergency (eg. if a car strikes the bridge). This is a recently new sign, as it wasn't under the bridge back a year before!

The underside of the bridge was faithfully replicated in the studio, enabling the TARDIS to be buried under a pile of rubble as the decaying bridge collapses on top of it.

Filming was from a raised camera platform which of course isn't normally there; also the overgrowth makes it impossible to take a decent photo from the 'correct' side of the steps!
